Kids and Youth

Kids are our fasting-growing group at HUCC!  We love each one and the exuberance, questions, and insights they bring.   We believe that each person carries something of the light of God’s Spirit, and we are committed to nurturing that light in our kids with our love, support, encouragement and faith so that it grows bright and strong and brings hope into our world.  Here are some of the ways we do that at HUCC.

Nursery Care

Our clean, well-equipped nursery is staffed by two church members who love kids and provide a warm, enjoyable experience for our babies and tots.

Worship and Children’s Sermons

On the first and third Sundays of the month, kids three years through sixth grade are invited to attend Children’s Chapel during the first 15 minutes of worship. Children’s Chapel helps kids experience the music and prayers of worship on their own level. The rest of the Sundays, kids three and older worship with the whole congregation for the first portion of worship. This helps them experience themselves as a part of the whole church worshiping God together. Early in the service, the pastor or a member of the church gives a child-oriented message designed to make biblical truths fun, engaging, and practical. After the Children’s Sermon, the kids are dismissed to their church school classes for the remainder of the worship time.

Kids often take part in worship as well.  They create a palm procession for Palm Sunday, put on a Christmas Pageant, help light our Advent Candles, share songs they have learned, and help lead other portions of the worship service.

Church School

HUCC is blessed with outstanding volunteer church school teachers, several of whom are current or retired professional school teachers, and who love helping children and youth grow in faith and Christian character formation.  Classes are age-graded, Pre-K through Youth, and use activities, music, stories, projects, and discussions to help kids learn the Bible stories and apply biblical truths to their lives.  Our kids love going to church school!

Our Children’s Choir is directed by two dedicated church members who enjoy helping teach our faith through music, rhythm and motion.  Sometimes individual church classes also share music they have learned with the whole congregation.

“Kids Chiming In” is a hand chimes choir for kids first grade and up. Kids love blending their notes with each other to create beautiful, worshipful music, which they then share with the whole congregation in worship.

Vacation Bible School

Every summer, we put on a week-long Summer Vacation Bible School that uses a child-friendly theme to bring Bible stories and Christian living exciting and fun to learn.  It’s hard to tell who has more fun—the kids or the teachers!

Fun Activities for the Whole Family

HUCC has a Church Family Fellowship program that plans fun events throughout the year to help build fellowship in our church family.  Many of these activities are designed to help the kids and their families grow in fellowship by sharing positive fun.

 Youth Program

Our youth group (for middle school and senior highs) is coordinated by Pastor Martha. It combines fun outings, service projects, and spiritual growth experiences, both within our church and with other youth groups. All youth are welcome to join in on the fun.

Confirmation

Our Confirmation Class is designed to help youth ages 13-14 make the transition from kids to young adults, and to articulate, claim and live a faith that is truly theirs.  The class focuses on Self, Society, Sexuality, and Spirituality, and helps the youth deepen and grow in each of these areas.  On Confirmation Sunday, the youth share their own statement of faith and are received into full membership of the church.

HUCC hosts two MOMS Clubs that each meet monthly to provide fellowship, mutual support and fun for stay-at-home moms and their children.

Marcie displays the quilt she made to lend to kids who need extra comfort.  The quilt was made from the leftover material from biblical costumes for kids.
